How does roadside assistance work?

Roadside assistance connects an eligible service request with a provider that can help with the vehicle problem. The process starts with your program’s contact instructions and ends with a clear understanding of the work performed and any charges.

1. Confirm safety and use the designated contact

Address any immediate emergency first. Then use the roadside number or service channel in your enrollment materials. If you cannot find it, AAPP general support can help identify your program. Your first call should establish what benefit you have and which dispatch process applies.

2. Describe the vehicle, location, and problem

Dispatch needs enough detail to route the request. Give the member information, callback number, vehicle description, exact location, and symptoms. Mention access restrictions, an unusable spare, a locked trunk, or a vehicle that will not shift. Small details can change the equipment needed.

3. Confirm eligibility and costs

Ask which service is approved, the applicable allowance, and whether you owe a separate charge. Get clarity before work begins, especially for extra towing mileage, parts, fuel, replacement keys, or independent service you arrange yourself. Keep the service reference number.

4. Stay available for updates

The provider may need directions or further information. Arrival estimates depend on traffic, weather, service demand, and safe access. If the situation changes, update dispatch instead of assuming the original instructions still fit.

5. Keep your records

Retain the service details and any itemized receipts. If a question remains about a charge or how an event counted toward your limit, contact support with the service date and reference. A service summary does not replace your written benefit terms.
